What is a Dialogue?

The Organizers' Forum has established a program of "Organizers' Dialogues" which take place in the Spring and Fall, involve 20-50 organizers, and are discussions of organizing issues, best practices, and challenges in our work. Involving organizers, academicians, policy experts and others as presenters, experienced organizers from a variety of community and labor organizations and networks come together to look honestly and critically at our work, learn new skills and approaches, share our “best practices” and are challenged by organizers who are doing exceptional or innovative organizing. Our spring Dialogues have been held in various cities in the U.S. and some of the topics have included:   "Organizer Training and Development", "Corporate Campaigns",  New Immigrant Organizing", and "Political Methodology".

We have recognized that globalization is impacting on both communities and workplaces in our country, and in similar but also unique ways in countries around the world.  We were interested in learning from organizers in other countries and cultures what kinds of strategies and tactics were being employed by organizers and their organizations, both community and labor.  Therefore in the fall of 2002 we traveled to Brazil right before the country's historic election of Lula as President.  It was a journey so successful that since then, we have traveled to India, South Africa, Indonesia, Turkey and Russia. In the fall of 2010, we will travel to Vietnam.
